Proficiency badges were introduced to Girl Scouting in 1913 and continue to be earned by Girl Scouts today. As part of Girl Scout program, badges enabled girls to learn sets of skills that ranged from domestic life and health, to the arts and sciences, to community and citizenship. To earn a badge, a Girl Scout must fulfill a number of requirements to show her proficiency in the subject matter or skill.
